Coastal observation: field validation

Connecting repeat remote observations with conditions measured at a field site.

The comparison problem

A coastline changes with water level, sediment, vegetation and human activity. It also appears differently as viewing geometry, illumination and instrument characteristics change. A useful monitoring record separates these effects before assigning a trend to the physical environment.

Field context

The Arbor program pairs repeat imagery with site records. Teams document conditions relevant to comparison: water level where available, observation geometry, recent weather and the method used to define the feature being tracked.

A field measurement checks a particular site and interval. It does not validate every pixel in an image. Programs document the geographic and methodological limits of the comparison.

Continuity across equipment changes

When an instrument or method changes, overlapping observations are used where practical to assess differences. Researchers retain the transition record so a discontinuity in the series is not mistaken for environmental change.

Research priorities

Priorities include consistent site documentation, comparison across methods and practical uncertainty reporting. The aim is a record that supports environmental research while making its limits visible.
